Rebecca Marx's Best Hamburger New York 2010 - 5 Napkin Burger
A disclaimer: As the only member of the Voice food department who doesn't eat meat, I don't have much to say about normal burgers. But I do have a lot to say about the veggie burger at 5 Napkin Burger. The patty's ingredients include barley, black beans, brown rice, sesame seeds, jalapeños, carrots, and beets, the latter of which lend it a convincing shade of meaty pink. Plopped onto a stout multigrain bun with lettuce, tomatoes, bread-and-butter pickles, and Russian-dressing-like 5N sauce, it's earthy, robust, compellingly sloppy, and intensely satisfying. And most important, it won't leave vegetarians staring with guilty longing at the plates of satiated carnivores.
