Sunny's Bar isn't trying to be a secret. But its location—buried on a deserted block in the deepest corner of Red Hook—and its spotty hours—open only three days a week—keep its profile consistently low. Unless, that is, you are one of the fortunate few who gather every weekend in the cozy back room for the best acoustic circle in the city. Regulars and newcomers lug their fiddles, mandolins, and even acoustic basses over each Saturday night for a rousing free-form session of bluegrass, Americana, Irish, and otherwise traditionally-inflected music. Vocalists jump in and out, the house piano sees some action, and the jam carries on into the wee hours. For musicians and audience alike, the close quarters and remote atmosphere aren't drawbacks—they're what makes the evening magical.
