Oneida

Oneida has been shape-shifting in the name of rock and roll for more than a decade now, and lately they've been specializing in endurance tests. During their eight-hour set at the All Tomorrow's Parties-produced I'll Be Your Mirror festival in Asbury Park, they showed off their formidable ability to shift from mind-evacuating drones to jitter-inducing music in the course of minutes. Yo La Tengo's James McNew, local guitar hero Marc Ribot, and drummer extraordinaire Greg Fox were among the NYC–area luminaries who sat in at Asbury Lanes over the course of the afternoon. It was the third time they've put on one of their extended jam sessions for an ATP-produced festival and not the first time I saw them do an hours-long jam session during this calendar year. This year's closing of the Williamsburg performance space Monster Island, which housed their rehearsal studio, the Ocropolis, means that the band will be honing their craft in a new space farther from the East River. But given the way that Oneida thrives on improvisation, that shift could be used as some thrilling fodder. enemyhogs.com
