Electric Cowbell

Few labels have been as devoted to the cause of the 45 as the two-year-old concern Electric Cowbell, a Brooklyn–based label that takes a genre-agnostic approach to assembling its roster. Run by the Virginia transplant Jimmy Thomson, the label boasts releases by the booty-funk revivalists Superhuman Happiness and the improv-happy Brooklyn duo Talibam! alongside the first seven-inch put out by punk pioneer Greg Ginn since his Black Flag days. The label has also reissued and remixed a track by the '60s Peruvian chicha act Los Ribereños. To hear Thomson tell it, though, spanning genres shouldn't be too much of a trick for a close listener: "I'm a musician first and foremost and can see how [the rhythms that underpin Afro-Cuban music] can be integrated. I just see these things alongside each other," he told the Voice back in July when explaining his rationale for having the world in his grasp. electric-cowbell.com
