Is there a sweeter story than two sisters from South Dakota who set up shop in Gowanus to make pies inspired by their grandmother's recipes? We don't think so, and especially not when the baked goods are this scrumptious. Melissa and Emily Elsen change up the fillings regularly according to the season, but if we had to pick an all-time favorite, it would be this past summer's nectarine-and-blueberry pie. Loaded with chunks of the juicy stone fruit and lots of purple-finger staining goodness, all encased in a flaky golden crust, it encapsulates the joy of sunny outdoor picnics. Unfortunately, the nectarine is one of summer's fleeting pleasures, but Four & Twenty Blackbirds has you covered for those snow-swept days of winter, too—their salted caramel apple pie isn't to be missed.
