Readers' Choice: Music Hall of Williamsburg

Full disclosure: When this year's awards were being assigned, this category was intended to reward the best live-music venue in the city, a place that kept the cover low and the volume high and that booked all types of shows for all types of crowds. The problem? South Williamsburg has three of those places, all on the same block of Kent Avenue. Start at Glasslands, a beautifully realized 300-person space where bands and DJs perform in front of an unmistakable handmade thunder cloud of paper, and the VIP section looks sort of like a tree house. Over the year, it has hosted shows by local punk faves Titus Andronicus, Alabama rap group G-Side, and buzzy Scandinavian pop duo Icona pop. Right next door, you'll find 285 Kent, the Todd P warehouse haunt that as of late has started to book some of the best dance acts in the country. Around the block, there's Death by Audio, the indie mainstay where the definition and limits of that abstract term are continually being pushed and called into question. Glasslands, 289 Kent Avenue, Brooklyn, glasslands.blogspot.com (11211); 285 Kent, 285 Kent Avenue, Brooklyn, toddpnyc.com (11211); Death by Audio, 49 South 2nd Street, Brooklyn, deathbyaudio.com (11211)
