So you wouldn't want to belong to a place that would have you as a member? If you think that's a funny observation, you'll definitely want to join the Friars Club, the legendary bastion of hoary but hilarious punchlines. They might even have you. After all, everyone here thinks with a ba-dum-pum at the end of his or her sentences. ("The pope wants priests to be married, but only to Jewish women. That's the only way they'll remain celibate." Ba-dum-pum.) And they have plenty of events to let their funny minds rip—some of them roasts, where they mercilessly make fun of a celebrity, and others tributes, though the shtickers usually can't help but throw a few roasty remarks into the adulation, thank God. Everyone from Jerry Lewis to Barry Manilow to Susan Lucci has gotten the Friars treatment in the past few years, and even Tom Cruise was feted by them at the Waldorf-Astoria this June and survived. Joining the club gets you the ability to buy tickets to these things, though to even be considered for membership, you must be sponsored by two members in good standing.
