Best Coffeehouse New York 2012 - The Queens Kickshaw
Fighting with NYU students for a table at Think will do if you're desperate for a caffeine fix, but it's refreshing to enjoy a cup of something out of the ordinary in an unexpected place. Yes, you're going to have a bit of a trek to try our pick for best coffeehouse, but its rustic charm and the aficionados behind the bar are worth it. Husband-and-wife team Ben Sandler and Jennifer Lim opened the Queens Kickshaw in Astoria last year, an all-in-one café/restaurant/canteen. Early birds behind laptops sip brews made with beans from local outfit Coffee Labs Roasters. At noon, a lunch crowd files into the brick-walled space, and in the evening, locals gather around the bar for dinner and spend the rest of the night drinking craft beer. But back to the coffee: Lim suggests starting with an espresso drink, though if you're in an adventurous mood, they've been experimenting with their version of an espresso soda, a shot of espresso with seltzer water. Priciest—though actually a steal at $4.50—is the Mast Bros. mocha, with hints of honey and lemon. If you can't get enough of its brew, the Kickshaw sells iced coffee in 32- and 64-ounce growlers to go. 40-17 Broadway, Queens, 718-777-0913, thequeenskickshaw.com (11103)
@tobyvogel @QueensKickshaw @AnneLaumen I'm an ex-#Astoria dweller, too! It's gotten exponentially cooler since I left, though.
