If you haven?t made a trek out to the Rockaways recently, you might find it hard to imagine that among the weedy, abandoned bungalows, the sparks of a food revolution are flying on this little strip of Queens. Believe it: In season, Andrew Field?s pioneering Rockaway Taco is well worth the trip for its excellent chilaquiles and tilapia tacos, and other vendors surround the beachside, locavore Mexican joint. Head to Low Tide Bar for kombucha and beer, Steve?s for scoops and milkshakes, or Commodore East for some pork boats, those sweet pulled-pork sandwiches garnished with pickled slaw. Who needs the Hamptons next year when you?ve got surfing and biking this great right here in the city.
