Deccan Spice
Southern Indian cooking has finally come into its own in the New York area, not just a dish or two on a mainly Mughal menu, or a shop that sells dosas, utthapams, and idlies, but little else. Newark Avenue in Jersey City has become a powerhouse of regional southern Indian cooking, one of its most ardent proponents being Deccan Spice. Encompassing both flesh and vegetable matter, the menu roughly represents the food you might get in a restaurant in Hyderabad, the Silicon Valley of India. There's a bang-up goat kurma and a Chettinad chicken that doesn't stint on heat.
