Best Reasonable Bike Shop - 2012
Manhattan Bicycles Inc.
Most sensible riders don't want to spend more money fixing up their bike than it cost to buy it in the first place. And we know a smallish, unglamorous but agreeable place in Hell's Kitchen where they're pretty quick and versatile, and some of your pocket dreams can really come true. You wheel your bike through the frighteningly narrow entrance toward the back of Manhattan Bicycles Inc., where there's a good chance that the worker (sometimes two) can handle your problem without a whole lot of wait time. And they don't gouge prices the way some other shops do. In fact, fixing a flat here will only cost you $10 or $12 (as of press time). What's more, they sell locks for as low as $15. You can buy a new mountain bike for $280. And if you're only interested in a rental, it's a mere five bucks an hour, with a two-hour minimum. The glitzier places tend to be less cruddy but more grubby, so give Manhattan a try rather than letting other stores take you for a ride. 791 Ninth Avenue, 212-262-0111 (10019)
