Readers' Choice: Cherry Jones

Like we said with actors, in a theater town as big as NYC, there's really no one single best actress. But you know who we've been thinking is pretty damn great these days? Well, the Voice gave her an Obie Award last year for her ensemble work in an Off-Broadway show, and she was just as good in a revival of a difficult Edward Albee play. There's something a little frightening about her, something in her strong presence and sculpted looks, something a shade unnatural about her onstage. But aren't those good things in an actress? We think so, and that's why we've been paying so much attention recently to Laila Robins. She won that Obie for her ensemble work in Richard Nelson's Sweet and Sad at the Public, and her portrayal of the dying Jo in Albee's The Lady From Dubuque at the Signature was both riveting and moving. She reprises her Sweet and Sad character this fall at the Public Theater, in Nelson's follow-up play. Although the piece is called Sorry, we'll be anything but that to see her again. 425 Lafayette Street, publictheater.org (10003)
