Elza Fancy Food
Korean expats have a long history in the republic of Uzbekistan, but the story of why is too long to explain here. Suffice to say, the cuisines have been melding in the former Soviet republic for more than a century, and a little café in Brighton Beach—now known as Elza Fancy Food, but formerly Café "At Your Mother-in-Law"—brings the odd crossover cuisine on like gangbusters. Although Uzbek standards such as manti dumplings are generous in size and well-steamed, go instead for some of the most Korean-sounding stuff on the bill of fare. Kuksu resembles bibimbap in soup form, with a lovely landscape laid out on top of the bowl, but don't ignore hye, a sort of Central Asian ceviche. Mind-boggling fusion inhabits every corner of the menu. 3071 Brighton 4th Street, Brooklyn, 718-942-4088 (11235)
