Best Hotel Bar New York 2013 - Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle Hotel
It's not every day you want to drink in a place that makes you feel incredibly self-conscious, one so expensive you feel like you can't afford the free nuts on offer atop the bar. That's the kind of place Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle Hotel on the Upper East Side is, and yet, we can't help but love it. Still, $20 for a single Johnnie Walker Red (whoa!) is a small(ish) price to pay to drink inside its historic walls. Named after famed artist and author Ludwig Bemelmans, creator of the Madeline children's books, the handsome bar has dark leather booths surrounded by murals he painted of Central Park in 1947. While the project lasted, the Carlyle gave him a free room in exchange. Today you're not allowed to even wear a hat in the place, so we don't recommend you try to write on the walls.
