Best Long Bike Ride New York 2013 - Day trip to the Rockaways
So many New Yorkers bike for their commutes, it's easy to forget that you can use your wheels to go somewhere other than work. When looking for a long-distance bike ride in the city, most people suggest riding up to Westchester County or some winding Hudson Valley route. Those are nice, but you don't have to leave the five boroughs to have a Tour de NYC: Plan a day trip to the Rockaways. From Manhattan you get to pedal through what seems to be 50 different Brooklyn neighborhoods, including some idyllic parts that are more Greenwich than BK. Depending on your starting point and how fast you can churn your legs, you can make it to the Marine Parkway Bridge in little over an hour. Cross that, and you're at the beach. Grab some tacos and watch the waves roll in with the skyline behind you. If you're exhausted, just hop on the subway and ride the rails home. Remember, you're still in New York.
