Best Off-Broadway Theater New York 2013 - St. Ann's Warehouse
The Tobacco Warehouse, which hunkers just on the edge of Brooklyn Bridge Park, was built in the 1870s and very nearly torn down at the turn of the last century. Its hulking red-brick façade has stood an attractive ruin ever since, hosting the occasional wedding, fashion show, and Smorgasburg. But in a couple of years it will enjoy a renovation and an even more exalted purpose—as the new home of St. Ann's Warehouse. Other theaters have attempted to combine music and drama, local work and international, friendly shows with more demanding ones, but no other space does it quite as artfully as St. Ann's, and finds room in the calendar to host a toy theater festival, too. As St. Ann's is already a hot destination, the Tobacco Warehouse space should make it positively smoking.
