Best Weekend Retreat New York 2013 - Cold Spring
There's truly nothing better than hopping on the Metro-North and leaving the city behind, if only for the weekend, and the lovely village of Cold Spring is the perfect getaway. Just 50 miles from the city and an hour and a half on the Hudson line, it's a well preserved national historic district with quaint streets to amble along and plenty to explore. Whether you're into antiquing (try Cold Spring Antiques Center and Art & Antiques/Downtown Gallery), outdoor activities (check out the more than 20 hiking trails and kayaking tours), or the arts (visit the Putnam History Museum and the slew of galleries on Main Street), you won't run out of enjoyable ways to pass the time. If you're staying for more than the weekend, an area rental is best (visit tripadvisor.com), but if you're only there for a night or two, the Pig Hill Inn, Plumbush Inn, and Hudson House Inn are great places to kick back and indulge in your much-needed retreat.
