Dark, Dark Houses
Give me Liberty...
In the Guardian, Maxie Szalwinska mourns the possible destruction of one of her favorite theaters, Wilton's Music Hall. The Playgoer, run by occasional Voice writer Garrett Eisler uses her article as an occasion to inquire what are readers favorite theaters, with a special emphasis on theaters in danger of closure. I'd like to ask a slightly sadder question. What are your favorite theaters that are no more. I've a special affection for the ghost of the Liberty, a Broadway theater now run to ruin and hidden behind a minimall of 42nd St. I also miss the theaters of ther Lower East Side where I did a lot of my theatergoing in my first years in New York, before they all became bars and restaurants.
