Don't Call Transgender Appointee The "First" Lady!
I remember when Phylicia Rashad bagged the Tony award for Best Actress, and in the press room was told she was the first African American to ever win in that category. Asked how she felt, Rashad looked a bit stymied and couldn't come up with an answer!
Perhaps similarly, Amanda Simpson, Obama's appointee to the Commerce Department, is a little worried about being labeled the first such advisor who's transgender. She doesn't want to be thought of as a token and rightfully feels it wasn't her gender identity that got her the job, it was her knowhow.
But I'm different! I'm thrilled to be known as the first gossip columnist who ever lived!
