Dorothy's Favorite Witch Gets a Book Deal
No one could say "Toto too?" and mean it more than Billie Burke, who illustriously played Glinda the Good Witch in the ultimate gay movie The Wizard of Oz, making it impossible for generations of divas to come to top her entrance in a glittery bubble. Well, she's hot again! Grant Hayter-Menzies has written a book, coming out this spring, called Mrs. Ziegfeld: The Public and Private Lives of Billie Burke and, like a very good witch, he generously wrote me to give some detail on it.
Says the author, "I devote a chapter to Billie's role as Glinda and to the genesis and symbology of the character. I also explore the facts and the fiction behind accounts of Billie's marriage to philandering husband Florenz Ziegfeld, her alleged relationship with director Dorothy Arzner, and show a very different side to the actress many erroneously suppose was as dithery in person as her best known comic role, Clara Topper."
Billie was a Topper? I could have sworn she bottomed! In any case, this book sounds right up my alley--and Toto too!
