To be as successful as Barack Obama, more Democrats have to be like Barack Obama. Which means talking about people being hurt by the economy, about the Democrats as the party of the people, about the role of government in making people's lives better, in every speech, no matter where you give it. It is the only way: this is the Democrats' comparative advantage, and the only way to cut into the Republicans' culture-war majority.
(Of course it helps if centrist Demorats of the DLC stripe manage to convince themselves you're actually one of them, even though the substance of your keynote speech at the Democratic Convention was about the same as Al Sharpton's.)
More dots shall be scattered tonight after I return the rental car.
