Fat Tuesday: The Patriot Edition
What could be more American than burgers and beer. And voting? Jim Leff is responsible for this find. He first brought me to the Patriot Saloon, possibly the loudest bar in New York, this summer.
Sometimes-topless bartenders, a dart-board, and Dolly Parton on the juke box are all fine and well, but it's the dumb waiter at the end of the bar that makes this place special. Mini burgers, fries, and onion rings, the all-American Trinity, are delivered via this dumb waiter from some mysterious location. Leff imagines that there is a Cinderella-like genius locked up in the basement, desperately trying to communicate through deep-frying to the booze-hounds upstairs.
We may never know for sure, but those tiny cheeseburgers, which come on steamed, eggy little buns, are a diamond in the rough. So I say, let's do it for our country.
