A vegan baker/musician/self-described attention seeker named Scott Alexander will be giving out free vegan cookies and playing music today in front of the Village Voice's humble abode at 36 Cooper Square between 5 and 7PM. Was it fate that brought EfV to his Craigslist ad at one o'clock in the morning? Or just undying cheapness that has us perusing the "free" board at bedtime? Hm, that's a tricky one.
Here is a link to Alexander's recipe page on his website.
I think this will answer an important question-- will people eat vegan cookies if they're free? Obviously sane people would avoid them otherwise. Or is that just the dairy in me talking?

No, free and vegan doesn't mean freegan. Freegans are concerned with how the goods we buy contribute to animal exploitation, ecological destruction, and human rights abuses-- including vegan foods. Even though the recipients of free cookies aren't paying for them, the person who is providing them bought them expressly to give away, benefiting the socially irresponsible corporations making the ingredients. By taking the free cookies, people validate the purchase of the ingredients, and perhaps encourage the baker to buy more ingredients to make more cookies, since the first batch of cookies was so successful.
I wasn't sure if people would really take cookies from a guy off the street but they went extremely fast! Parents even let their kids take cookies from a stranger!
And while I am by no means a freegan, I salute you guys and would like you to know that I do try to by the most socially responsible ingredients available.
