Free Community Papers
UNION SQUARE--From 11 a.m.-3 p.m. today, activists from the Counter Convention collective will be distributing 25,000 free copies of a 16-page, four-color tabloid, I Am New York City. Produced with donated labor and funds from a July party, the publication features profiles of community-based organizers focused on the causes of women, gays and lesbians, immigrants, low-income people, and people of color. The intention is to show the RNC protests as a natural and positive expression of the city's spirit."We really want to engage our New York City neighbors as closely and directly as we can," said William Etundi, a Counter Convention member who worked on the paper. "This is New York City rising up, a celebratory moment of New York City resistance. We should be very proud, celebrate each other, and stand together."
