Irish Eyes, Smiling
Slainte, Irish Repertory Theater. If we may be permitted to stereotype, we imagine more than one glass of Guiness will be raised at the news that the Irish Rep has received the Jujamcyn Award. The $100,000 that accompanies it likely won't go amiss. The Jujamcyn award is annually bestowed upon "a resident theater organization that has made an outstanding contribution to the development of creative talent for the theater."
The Rep seems an unlikely choice in some ways, it hasn't been as successful at fostering and presenting new Irish writing as it might. But if its new plays tend toward the unsatisfying, its revivals are often an extreme delight. Directors Charlotte Moore and Ciaran O'Reilly have staged gorgeous renditions of Boucicault, WIlde, and Shaw, etc.
The funds will likely be put to the Rep's capital campaign, a $6 million attempt to purchase their building. Having only recently survived a much, much, much less expensive real estate transaction, we wish them the luck of the Irish.
