Khat Alley

You've no doubt read elsewhere about khat, the euphoriant plant that Yemenis, Ethiopians and Eritreans chew and sometimes make into tea. In Yemen, it's a central part of life, which I will write more about in an upcoming entry, when I'm off deadline. I was trying to interview a man I saw in the khat market the other day, in the town of Ma'rib (east of Sana'a), about life in the area. Under other circumstances, he said, he'd do it, but if he didn't get his khat and start chewing, he'd start flipping out. We let him go.

In the meantime, a shot of a small street in Sana'a where you buy the branches by the bunch.
