Local Politics

In the midst of the presidential election, it's easy to forget that there are local issues at stake. In Florida, there's Betty Castor and Mel Martinez's fight to replace Bob Graham in the Senate. There's also an amendment on the ballot that would make gambling legal in the state, allowing counties to raise school funds.

But perhaps key for John Kerry will be Amendment 5--a measure that the actvist group ACORN is pushing. It would raise the minimum wage by a dollar. Cheaply made ads for it pop up sporadically on the tube. Local pundits believe the measure might help Kerry because it will motivate people short on pocket change to cast a ballot--and those voters who are likely to back Kerry.
