Nightlifey Doings For Y'all To Drink In
As usual, I do the partying so you don't have to.
And here's what's been going on in after-midnight-land lately:
*On Top!, the Tuesday night rooftop party at the Standard, put on by Ms. Susanne Bartsch, is back and has had to face a run of bad weather, plus some new competition (parties like the Westway and Calypso). But this is the place to shake your feathers while taking in the view, having a crepe, and avoiding the chlorine wafting from the floor below (while dodging tourists and an occasional Jersey Shore type). Dress up, dahlings!
*The HOWL! Festival was highlighted by the Jackie Factory's Chi Chi Valenti and Johnny Dynell homaging old-time E.V. culture with a nouveaux retro revue called Low Life 6: East Village Others. The Jack Smith number was a gorgeous sea of shiny gold, colorful crinolines, bare chests, and a cardboard Egyptian tomb. When the music gave out, the cast danced around the stage and Brandon Olsen--as Jack--urged the crowd to put on more lipstick. Genius! And then the music came back and they did the number from the top!
*Linda Simpson launched Exhibit A, a last-Sunday-of-the-month bash at Bowery Poetry Club. It's ambisexually hipstery, with drag performances--though when people pulled folding chairs from against the wall and sat down on the dance floor, Linda was justly irked. I told her to make an announcement demanding that they stand and she did so, thereby making the space way more energetic and happeningly hot. And they respected her even more afterwards.
*Rasputin: Russian Love Machine Saturdays at Rush are attracting a rough and ready, mostly gay boho crowd that's super cute and not the least bit pretentious. And the house dancers are generally a show unto themselves.
