P73, make a note of it.
Last week I attended a housewarming party in Fort Greene for P73, a young foundation providing financial support and career development assistance to playwrights. The invitation asked guests to help inaugurate the office by bringing their favorite office supply. On a table, underneath a plastic fir tree, guests piled up Post-its, binder clips, and those nifty silver marking pens. Composer Gabriel Kahane entertained with selections from his Craigslistlieder and a very moving anthem celebrating the late and occasionally lamented Underberg building.
Because P73 is a young foundation and their resources are somewhat limited, they've chosen to assist only one playwright per year. They offer the playwright a small stipend, additional funds for research and to fund collaborating artists. The year culminates with a public presentation of the playwright's work. This funding structure seems pretty sensible, a smart allocation of small resources.
Would love any other information about new foundations and any unusual funding or fellowship structures.
