The new face of musical theater
We've snuck a sneak peak at the P.S.122 fall season and are particularly excited about an appearance by hipster rockers Japanther who will present a new work featuring “an animatronic robot dinosaur.” We don't know much more about it, but “an animatronic robot dinosaur"! Now when our friends come up to us and ask us whatever can be done to make theater cool again, we have an answer: “an animatronic robot dinosaur." Apparently dance and conceptual art features, too.

I guess I understand what people with astigmatism felt when coke bottle glasses became cool along the G Line. Admittedly, popular musical theater is pretty shitty these days (High Fidelity?) but are robotic dinosaurs and other cliche tropes of the "avant-nerd" (i.e. space travel, anything by the flaming lips) really the answer to "making theater cool again?" For fans of musical theater the way it's been done by people like Sondheim and Gettel over the years, I really can't imagine there being anything worse than the words "hipster," "musical," and "cool" together at last. I guess what I'm tryin to say is, cool people stop fucking shit up with your irony and astigmatism.
