Studio 54 To Reopen Without Sex And Drugs
In keeping with today's nocturnal propensity for good behavior and crackdowns, the ghost of that legendary '70s den of debauchery Studio 54 is turning into a posh supper club!
Downstairs from what used to be 54 will be 54 Below, a 160-seat, wood-paneled cabaret room that will be christened in June via the dulcet tones of Patti LuPone and that will go on to feature all sorts of talents culled from both Broadway and the Lower East Side.
With the Oak Room's closing, this should bring a new beginning for the modern cabaret era, reportedly by fusing the uptown sensibility with a Joe's Pub-ish touch. (See link.)
But don't expect it to be any kind of comeback for Studio 54.
There will be no sex in the balcony. (There is no balcony.)
There will be no drugs in the basement. (This is the basement.)
And they will probably pay their taxes!
