The Best Actress In A Musical Tony Nominees Will Be...
I love predicting Tony award categories 10 whole months before they're announced because there's something so perverse about guessing who'll get the nominations before some of the shows have even started rehearsing!
Even more deliciously, I usually get at least 60% right.
So here are my predix for the Best Actress in a Musical Tony:
*Chita Rivera for The Mystery of Edwin Drood
She could just stand onstage and text and be brilliant. And Cleo Laine was nominated for the same dual roles in the original production, so it's a winning proposition. (Or at least a nominating proposition.)
*Laura Osnes for Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella. If you can get nominated for Bonnie and Clyde, you can certainly get nominated for this.
*The four girls who play Matilda. They'll be irresistible--and let's not forget that the three Billy Elliots won. Best Actor, that is.
*Katie Finneran in Annie. Again, a fabulous actor in a wow role, which happened to have won Dorothy Loudon a Tony for the original. I don't see how this could miss. (Then again, I thought Jersey Boys would run two weeks.)
*And the fifth slot will go to either Stephanie J. Block (Edwin Drood), Deborah Cox (Jekyll & Hyde), Carolee Carmello (Scandalous), Donna Murphy or Amy Adams (if they move Into The Woods), Megan Hilty (if they move Gentlemen Prefer Blondes), the girl who plays Annie, or someone from Bring It On, Hands on a Hardbody, Honeymoon in Vegas, Diner, A Christmas Story, Motown, or Big Fish.
How's that for precision?
