The other contest

Nobody in Duval County cares about politics today. The Florida Gators are set to square off with their hated interstate rivals, the Georgia Bulldogs. Of the many cultural chasms that separate North and South, non-pro football has to rank high. Last night the whole sprawling city of Jacksonville shook into party mode. Cars streaked along the highways brandishing Gator banners. Dumb white kids cat-called from the windows at no one in particular.

Even the black folks got into the act--sorta. While the rest of the city celebrated the big match, a smaller, more low-key festival simmered in the black areas, as two of the black high schools--Raines and Ribault--prepared to square off. It's a welcome respite from weighing the fate of the free world.
