What Do This Year's Acclaimed Movies Have In Common?
I'm talking about such notable entries as
My Week With Marilyn
A Dangerous Method
The Iron Lady
Sherlock Holmes 2
The Tree of Life
Midnight in Paris (partly)
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
And even W.E.!
They're all set in the past!
And my theory is that in a bad economy, people long to lose themselves in previous eras.
Even if it means exploring dark periods -- at least it's not now!
Yes, there are some titles I left out -- and sure, you will all now chime in with the acclaimed 2011 movies that are set in the present.
That's not my point.
My point is that when the country's mood gets despondent, people line up to be transported to yesteryear as if by a $13.50-a-ticket time tunnel.
It's what movies do best.
And I hope this leads to some '70s disco flicks!
