You Know, For Kids: Edward Scissorhands

Bedtime Story?

Saw Matthew Bourne’s dance adaptation of Edward Scissorhands at BAM last weekend. Was seated just in front of the Voice’s estimable and very affable film critic J. Hoberman. When asked his opinion, Hoberman responded that he thought the show belonged on 42nd, conveniently near to other shows designed for children such as The Lion King or Mary Poppins.

He’s not far wrong. There is something quite childlike about the often sparkling and occasionally banal production. I certainly took a child’s pleasure in it, particularly the lavish sets and lighting. With Shockheaded Peter long closed, there’s certainly a slot for macabre kiddie entertainment.

What other gruesome fare might you like to see adapted for tots?
