  • Coney Island

    Coney Island

1208 Surf Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11224
    718-372-5159

http://www.coneyisland.com Why Coney Island? Well, there is the hot dog competition, and if you can eat 55 you might be able to win next year. There is the boardwalk and the nasty New York harbor water, but, most importantly, Coney Island has an old school freak show, or sideshow, as they call it. See a sword eater, a bug eater, a contortionist, a mermaid (really just a stripper with a tail), and more! And of course, all those games to win stuffed animals. Hours: Easter-Memorial Day Sat & Sun; Memorial Day-Labor Day Daily; Labor Day-late September Sat & Sun More >>

  • Demo's Wonderwheel Amusement Park

    3059 W. 12th St. Brooklyn, NY 11224
    718-372-2592

http://www.wonderwheel.com Evoking that neighborhood carnival feel, Demo's Wonderwheel has bumper cars, Spook-O-Rama and a somewhat bizarre Ferris wheel (the ride has the traditional rotating cars, but also cars that swing out from the center of the wheel). Beware: the rides here are terrifyingly rickety. Open April to October. More >>

  • Luna Park

    Luna Park

1000 Surf Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11224

http://www.lunaparknyc.com In the interest of preserving summer fun at Coney Island, the historic amusement park was revived by a Bloomberg commission in 2009. It's home to the iconic 1927 Cyclone roller coaster, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as 19 other thrill rides and family attractions. It's within view of the beach and the boardwalk, and walking distance from the original Nathan's restaurant. Several train lines make their final stops at the close by Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue Station. More >>

  • New York Aquarium

    New York Aquarium

    Surf Ave. & W. 8th St. Brooklyn, NY 11224
    718-265-FISH

http://www.nyaquarium.com The New York Aquarium is just about the only thing open on Coney Island during the winter (actually it's open 365 days a year). With a typical array of sharks, rays, otters, whales and other fish, the aquarium t is the only one in the city and has a long history (it used to be in Battery Park in 1896). Not only that, it still manages to properly evoke old-time Coney Island while remaining modern, which is a feat. Hours: May 27-Sept 4 Mon-Fri 10am-6pm, Sat & Sun 10am-7pm All others: Mon-Fri 10am-5pm, Sat & Sun 10am-5:30pm More >>
