Huckleberry Bar

Huckleberry Bar

Joining joints like Jimmy's #43 and Cantina, Huckleberry is one of those bars that offer amazing food made in equipment-challenged micro-kitchens.

The Forum, one of the few lounges in Union Square territory, brings peace during the weekdays and boisterous partying on the weekends. Saturdays, for example, require plus-sized bouncers to monitor the swarms of cocktail-craving, dancing citizens.
Company Bar

Company Bar

If the hockey jerseys lining the walls at Company Bar don't draw you in, the great food and unpretentious atmosphere surely will. Stop by any night of the week for a refreshing round of hot wings and cold drinks.

718-397-7256 In its past life as a shore leave sailoras haunt, Friendas Tavern offered a respite to the rough and stormy seas. Now, as the oldest gay bar in Queens, it offers an alternative to Manhattanas snobbiness. The diverse neighborhood crowd is friendlyaand flirty. • The Frying Pan

    23rd & W. Side Highway New York, NY 10011

It seems like this little rusty boat has been around foreveraalways offering pleasant alternatives to the islandas guido-ish, techno-loving party crowd. Originating from North Carolina, itas been the home to numerous one-off parties with its gutted main engine room serving as a well-used dancefloor and theater. Itas particularly good in the summer when the winds from the river give partiers a bit of a cooldown. Read more about this New York bar or club >>

  • Fuelray Bar & Lounge

    68 W. 3rd St. New York, NY 10012
212-995-1900 This place just screams "date bar," right down to the red-tinted walls, candles, and cutesy decorative statues. Because of the West Village location, it also screams "date bar for NYU students." Once you get over that, though, the cocktails are really quite goodatry the "Dark and Dirty," which tastes like a cross between a Bloody Mary and a classic martini. • The Full Shilling

  • Fusion

    818 10th Ave. New York, NY 10019

This alfresco cocktail space is a cozy locals' den. The long, narrow lounge opens up, via a small tent (for rainy days?), to an urban canyon dotted with plastic chairs and potted trees. We plopped down on a park bench and, beneath the fire escapes and peacefully droning air conditioners, enjoyed a sparkling, minty Bacardi mojito and a vodka-based Pussyfoot aa secret recipe, though we detected hints of melon and citrusawhich came chilled in a martini glass. My drinking buddy, an interior designer by trade, remarked that the mood lighting was "excellent." Read more about this New York bar or club >>
