http://www.nikkibeach.com Nikki Midtown, an offshoot of the popular Miami beachside club, is an upscale spot to bop to Top 40, dance on tables, and drink tropical-influenced spritzers. It gets crowded fast with preppy clientele after 11pm--when, not coincidentally, a pretty hostess in a micro-mini climbs onto the center banquette to shred an electric violin. http://www.ninthwardnyc.com/main.html With a theme built around 19th-century New Orleans, the Ninth Ward is just as ominous as the name implies. Owned by the same folks behind the equally eerie Shoolbred's across the street, the bar goes for a similar "abandoned but strangely intact parlor room" feel. Look for real, salvaged New Orleans decor, all weathered, wooden, and damp-looking with occasional bursts of beauty, such as an ornate stained-glass panel of a pirouetting dancer. Here, Abita is the beer of choice, while the star cocktail is the rum-based Hurricane, prized Louisiana beverages both out-of-towners and East Village regulars can agree on. http://www.nitanitabk.com Though this tavern with a verdant backyard styles itself a tapas bar, the food often falls outside the Spanish canon. Favorite dishes on a first visit included bitter greens drenched with parmesan and garlic sauce, a crusty mac and cheese, thick slices of beefsteak rubbed with spices and done rare, and a fairly spectacular chorizo-and-chicken gumbo, a special that evening. If the service wasn't so bad, and the drinks a tad less expensive, we'd give this joint a pick and eat full meals there. Instead, it's just a good place for a snack and a single glass of tempranillo. http://www.noideabar.com Always wanted a girlfriend named Karen or a boyfriend named Bob? At the No Idea Bar, each night is assigned a different first name, and anyone so named drinks free. Name Night features a wide variety of monikers, from Sharon to Solanchy, Kevin to Khoon-Ying. (The name schedule is posted at noideabar.com.) On a good night, you'll drink free; on a great night, you'll hear live accordion music and get served by a one-legged bartender named Puddles. If you're drinking free, everybody knows your name. http://www.nomalice.com The fact that there's no signajust a faded awning that says "Delia's"awould seem to be a good deterrent, but you'd never guess it based on the big crowds that amass at night when hip-hop DJs take to the decks. The drinks are priceyaaround $5 for a bottle of not-very-good beerabut No Malice Palace makes up for it with ambience; it's a comfy and roomy refuge, complete with fireplace, garden, and antique furniture. The distressed wooden façade offers no clue to the delights within, nor does it even identify the spot as a bar – though one glimpse at the tattooed hipsters emerging will tip you off. Inside, there’s something vaguely Chinese-y about the place, and you’re likely to spot a short menu on nearly every table. This bill of fare highlights homemade noodles that might have been inspired by Xi-an Famous Foods – thick white fettuccine in soups or with toppings, a bit blander than their inspiration, as if someone discovered that, devoid of too much chile oil, nothing is better at settling the stomach and absorbing the byproducts of alcohol consumption. Weather permitting, the backyard is one of best outdoor spaces in Greenpoint. Read more about this New York bar or club >>
NoNo means aNorth of Northern Boulevard, a a name that denotes the hipness of Soho but without an expensive zip code. Behind the drab faASSade, this lounge delivers a friendly bartender who will remember your drink after a few visits, a sleek decor, and a young professional crowd. The couches that line the walls are a great place to drink a finely mixed martini and chat with a borough-bound buddy. Read more about this New York bar or club >>
http://www.noormanskil.com Ah, whiskey--the ultimate cure for sadness. Did you just get dumped? Take a shot. Did you get laid off? Take a shot. Did a pet pass away? Take a shot. The thing is though, despite all its benefits to sadness, whiskey can be appreciated, too. Head to Noorman's Kil for any situation in which you need that brown liquid. With more than 350 whiskies (and 12 beers on tap), a knowledgeable staff, and a welcoming environment, it's your go-to spot for sucking a bottle dry. Plus, if you get a little too tipsy too quickly, ask the bartenders for a grilled cheese. Not only do they know their bourbon, but it also might be the best grilled cheese in Brooklyn. http://groups.google.com/group/nowherebarqueernyc Nowhere is now somewhere. This laid-back pseudo-dive has a pool table, nightly drink specials (two-for-one happy hour), and a diverse (lotsa lesbs too), young clientele. Grab a Newcastle or Stella on draft and mingle. Although six-footers will need to watch out for the low ceiling and air duct, the welcoming atmosphere will more than make up for a bumped head. Read more about this New York bar or club >>
http://www.nublu.net Despite the lack of a sign and a somewhat out-of-the-way location on Ave. C, Nublu always seems to be packed, even on weeknights. The big draw of this bar in summer is the Japanese-inspired garden and solarium; the latter comes complete with comfy futuristic furniture, like bouncy plastic bubbles for chairs. The techno DJs can be a mixed bag, but good Belgian beer on tap (like strong, heady Leffe) and tasty house drinks made with ingredients like fresh sugarcane juice keep the crowd sufficiently distracted. http://www.nyperks.com It was hard to imagine that anything black existed on this hipster-soaked strip in Cobble HIll, but there it was: urban-city U.S.A., smack in the heart of hipsterville. We made our way past the door and were greeted by a happy-as-fuck-it's-Friday crowd holding court at the martini bar and groovin' to reggae tunesadespite the lack of a dance floor. Men loosened their ties while the ladies unfastened the buttons of their blouses and unleashed after-work cleavage. The female bartender shaking her mixer like a mad scientist serves me an Apple Martini ($10), which I immediately regret after overhearing two women order the bar's signature drinks, Wet Kiss and Baby Mama Drama, which turn out to be great conversation starters for a few guys close by.
