Huckleberry Bar

Huckleberry Bar

Joining joints like Jimmy's #43 and Cantina, Huckleberry is one of those bars that offer amazing food made in equipment-challenged micro-kitchens.

The Forum, one of the few lounges in Union Square territory, brings peace during the weekdays and boisterous partying on the weekends. Saturdays, for example, require plus-sized bouncers to monitor the swarms of cocktail-craving, dancing citizens.
Company Bar

Company Bar

If the hockey jerseys lining the walls at Company Bar don't draw you in, the great food and unpretentious atmosphere surely will. Stop by any night of the week for a refreshing round of hot wings and cold drinks.

  • Regents Piano Bar

    317 E. 53rd St. New York, NY 10022

Sophisticated and refined middle-aged gay men hold court in this elegant but small piano bar. Leather-backed chairs, paintings, and a grand piano make it seem like you're on the set of an '80s arts documentary program but the photos of the royal family of England seem to give it a slightly more absurd and tongue-in-cheek atmosphere. Reif's Tavern

    302 E. 92nd St. New York, NY 10128
212-426-0519 Reif's Tavern is a quintessential dive that overflows with old-time character. The exposed-brick interior is adorned with quirky paraphernalia (funny masks, a weird picture of the Three Stooges), and darts, pool, and old-school arcade games (Ms. Pac-Man, Galaga) keep the crowd amused while they knock back cheap beer. A testament to the good-natured openness of this bar is that there's a patio out back with grills that anyone can use. Read more about Reif's Tavern >>

  • Rhythm & Booze

    Rhythm & Booze

    1674 10th Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11215

Ah, the beauty of the neighborhood sports bar, unadulterated by posh Brooklyn's yuppie leanings. Rhythm & Booze is a prime specimen, catering to an older, local crowd in unpretentious Windsor Terrace. Despite the kitschy name, game-day volume is jacked instead of some trendy music, and the bar always serves cheap drinks and, on Mondays and Wednesdays, 50 cent wings. In fact, Rhythm & Booze serves above average bar fare that's taken over the top with atypical flourishes. Consider the cleverly prepared hamburger: No, it’s no gourmet-gruyere affair, but rather an old-fashioned patty sandwiched into a grease-trap English muffin whose nooks cradle the juice and flavor. The bar, however, is relatively unadorned--brick walls, basic wood tables, a few posters/schedules, and one of those Internet jukeboxes. The people are what give Rhythm & Bar its color, and while vibe is due mostly to the neighborhood patrons, the bartenders are perfectly welcoming and even have a few finer brews on tap to satisfy the Park Slope runoff. Still, they all can pour a solid Guinness. --Alex Spoto Read more about Rhythm & Booze >>

  • Rick

    Rick's Cabaret

    50 W. 33rd St. New York, NY 10001
212-372-0850 Winner of our "Best Post-Macy's Fix" in 2010, Rick's Cabaret is a super-sized strip joint (and steakhouse!) located just around the corner from wholesome Herald Square. Despite what meets the eye, perhaps Rick's and the department store giant share something in common: a high fantasy of red-carpet luxury. At Rick's, all guests are VIPs and are personally escorted into the glitzy, scarlet-tinged main room (unless you're discreetly trying to slip in the side door). This multi-level establishment elevates the archetypal strip club stereotypes into a grandiose theater of quick-draw thong bikinis, billowing, velvety curtains, and frosty, metallic decor. If you want to get serious about that VIP status and drop some real cash, there are plenty of private rooms. Plus, that steakhouse is actually worth talking about. The menu features decadent cuts of red meat and shellfish cocktails that will get the blood rolling. What's more is the three course $10 lunch special, which would be a solid deal anywhere--even if one of the courses didn't involve steak. There's no cover before 7 p.m., and each day, there are plenty of ambitious office workers trying to snag a square meal and take in the scenery before the clock runs out on their lunch break. --Alex Spoto Read more about Rick's Cabaret >>
