http://www.arkrestaurants.com Don't be fooled by the name -- there's nothing magnificent and breathtaking about Sequoia. Rather, it's another sad bar in a pathetic mall-like entity that's not really a mall, anyway. The happy hour can be pretty fun, but in general, you should hang at Jeremy's Ale House (around the corner) and let a nice tourist have your seat. Read more about this New York bar or club >>
http://www.sevillarestaurantandbar.com Even though Sevilla's open 365 days a year, it's still hard to score one of its crimson-red booths. The loyal clientele of this 61-year-old Greenwich Village establishment can't get enough of its authentic paella, seafood-heavy appetizers, and some of the best sangria in the city. In the heart of NYU-land is this sexy wine bar that works well for groups as well as couples. The exposed brick and dark lighting help create the mood, but it's also the type of place where you can order a pint without a wine-snob waiter looking down his nose at you. Also serves tasty desserts. Read more about this New York bar or club >>
http://www.shadesofgreenpub.com For a pub whose name suggests multitudes, Shades of Green has a pretty singular mission statement: to be Union Square's only authentic Irish pub. To do so, it has acquired all the right tools: framed photos of James Joyce and like-minded writers from ye olde country, Guinness on tap, chicken pot pie on the menu, and a room painted in, of course, various shades of green. A simple concept, but one that's otherwise missing from the franchise-laden Union Square cabal. Fittingly, the pub is located a street separated from the surrounding commotion, so it caters to locals. Read more about this New York bar or club >>
With a name like aShamrock Inna, this Irish bar is about as Irish as you can get, but they don't serve food. With shamrock- and Irish harp-decorated mirrors adorning the walls and seven beers on tap (Guinness included of course), all served up by a staff of Irish bartenders, the Shamrock Inn attracts fan of the Irish from all age groups. A great place to meet the sports fan of your dreams, perhaps sharing a karaoke duet of "Leather and Lace" on Sunday night. Otherwise just enjoy a beer, the game, and some pub grub. Read more about this New York bar or club >>
A barmaid was once murdered in here for telling somebody it was last call, but it wouldnat be very nice to mention that to any of the staff or regulars. Other than that haunting memory this neighborhood pub is like many others in the area, so if youare right there, stop in. Read more about this New York bar or club >>
http://www.shoolbreds.com One of the few places around here where kilts can seem kind of menacing, Shoolbred's serves as the area's darkest, most mysterious spot to sip a pilsner. The Scottish-inflected interior is wooden, weathered and antique-heavy, filled with paisley wallpaper, dim maroon lamps, a flickering fireplace, abundant panels of stained glass, and portraits of anonymous mustachioed men. The patrons, however, are hyper-modern East Village scenesters who, if it weren't for their own mustaches, would seem as though they'd broken into some poor old Scot's parlor and set up shop. Regardless, it's a place this cast of regulars calls home. Read more about this New York bar or club >>
Should you ever find yourself stranded in Staten Island, waiting to get back to civilization, grab a beer at the Sidestreet Saloon. The solid, dependable dive bar is located just a few blocks away from the ferry terminal. Read more about this New York bar or club >>
http://www.sidetracksny.com This weekday pub transforms into a club on weekends. So stop by for a pint, indulge in a serving of shepherd's pie, and then hang tight until the DJ starts spinning (just make sure it's a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday). Read more about this New York bar or club >>
http://www.sidewalkmusic.net Established singer-songwriters and heartfelt hopefuls strut their stuff (well, as much as singer-songwriters strut) in scheduled shows and open-mic nights at this East Village stalwart. In addition to a steady roster of young acts, the divey Sidewalk is known for its cheap food menu, unusual 24-hour-a-day schedule, and the rows of tables and chairs lined up outside the building--where, during the summer, the post-work crowd downs frozen pink margaritas and cheap beer while watching Avenue A traffic drift by. http://www.clubsilhouettes.com The regulars at Silhouettes call it athe lifestylea but you can call it whatever you want. Silhouettes is a Staten Island club for couples who experiment with other couples. The organizers strive to create an environment that emphasizes safety in every respect. They serve food and mixers but you have to bring your own alcohol. Like most similar clubs, thereas a slant toward facilitating female attendance and not male. Tickets and attendance inquiries are dealt with online. Single men can come along but if their partner leaves then they have to go as well. Single men who just turn up at the door are more than likely to be turned away. And then thereas the long ferry ride back to Manhattana| Read more about this New York bar or club >>
http://www.sincitynewyork.com The purple lighting, common among strip clubs and movie theaters, somehow works at this Bronx strip club. Sin City tries to go for the classy look with the mahogany and brass accents, but really it's the kind of place where you hope to (and will likely) see some cheap girl-on-girl action. But hey, this isn't your ordinary "cabaret lounge," these guys also have tanning beds, workout rooms, and private showers. Just in case you were wondering. http://www.karaokesingsing.com Alphabet City's Sing Sing Karaoke, the messy but lovable older brother of Sing Sing Karaoke St. Marks, revels in its dishevelment. The room itself is essentially a concrete rectangle painted a polluted blue-grey, stocked with cheap liquor, and filled with tuneless stars. But such is the allure: This is about the whole place banding together to produce something listenable. One man's particularly ear-shattering rendition of Third Eye Blind's "Semi-Charmed Life," for example, is another man's priceless generator of camaraderie. http://www.karaokesingsing.com Sing Sing Karaoke provides the basics: a tiny room with one screen above the bar, a cute little disco ball, and, in the tiny space to the right of the bar, another screen. The usual crowd is just as low-key, a group of people huddling around the bar and passing around the mic while a few energized folks dance directly behind. Have no fear--you will always get your turn at the mic, and you will probably beat everyone to "Don't Stop Believing." Read more about this New York bar or club >>
