Huckleberry Bar

Huckleberry Bar

Joining joints like Jimmy's #43 and Cantina, Huckleberry is one of those bars that offer amazing food made in equipment-challenged micro-kitchens.

The Forum, one of the few lounges in Union Square territory, brings peace during the weekdays and boisterous partying on the weekends. Saturdays, for example, require plus-sized bouncers to monitor the swarms of cocktail-craving, dancing citizens.
Company Bar

Company Bar

If the hockey jerseys lining the walls at Company Bar don't draw you in, the great food and unpretentious atmosphere surely will. Stop by any night of the week for a refreshing round of hot wings and cold drinks.

  • 1050 Lounge in the Skyline Hotel

    735 10th Ave. New York, NY 10019

No tourists here. Instead, local couples whisper at tables under the glow of urban-chic candelabras. Sinking into a red velvet booth, we opt for a tangy cosmo ($9) and a sweet Grand Marnier nightcap ($8). Read more about 1050 Lounge in the Skyline Hotel >>

  • Applebee

    234 W. 42nd St. New York, NY 10036
212-391-7414 The former Atlanta-based T.J. Applebee's Rx for Edibles and Elixirs, opened in 1980, has been transformed into one of the nation's best-known chain restaurants, and its New York locations are easy to find on Voice Places. Thanks to consistency (Applebee's barbecued ribs are a worthy secret-recipe signature dish), a menu for the health-conscious (like the good-for-you Napa Chicken and Portobello platter, part of the chain's Under 550 Calories menu), and some wacky promotional schemes (the company has asked diners to rewrite popular songs with Applebee's menu items as the lyrics), the once-local restaurant now boasts 2,000 locations nationwide. • Bar Centrale

    Bar Centrale

    324 W. 46th St. New York, NY 10036-3801
212-581-3130 You have to be a real theater-world insider to find or even know about Bar Centrale, the most alluring place in town to compare Playbills and talk turkey (as in Broadway flops--you know, Pirate Queen. Bonnie and Clyde. The last Tony awards). You go to the building next to Joe Allen's and head up the imposing steps, right up to a door that isn't even marked. Once you open it, don't think you can just waltz in and grab a table, even if you're a major personage like we all think we are. The place happens to be small and speakeasy-ish, so a reservation is highly recommended, because the seating books up, especially at the peak hours after showtime (though if they have to dis you, they're nice about it; they might even help you get a table next door). Once seated at Bar Centrale, you've got a captive audience of theater folks, whether it be Hugh Dancy hanging with playwright David Ives or a table mashing up critics like Charles Isherwood and Charles McNulty. The food is pretty basic and smallish, but the room's atmosphere is what you feast on, feeling as if you've seen a whole other show. Read more about Bar Centrale >>

  • Barrage

    401 W. 47th St. New York, NY 10036

Even if a barman does ignore you, the Calvin Klein ads on the walls of Barrage will keep you interested until they get your order happening. Plush leather seating and goldfish on the bar donat make this place a fascinating concept wonderland so much as a suitably elegant and comfortable place to have a conversation with friends or to make new ones. Happy hour is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and then again from 11 p.m. to midnight daily. Read more about Barrage >>

  • BLDG NYC (old China Club)

    268 W. 47th St. New York, NY 10036
212-398-3800 The beautiful, or at least beautifully dressed, people throw it down at China Club, a 20-year-old establishment with three floors, multiple DJs, and yards of red velvet complimenting dark wood. Open four days a week, the venue always has one spinning Latin tunes each night, with the other floors featuring R&B or House. Cover varies. Wear your fine threads, as miscreants sporting hats, unfashionable boots and sneakers will not make it through the door. For those who care, China Club has seen the error of its ways and axed the male strip show, which featured the most horrifyingly harry asses in NYC. Read more about BLDG NYC (old China Club) >>

  • Blue Fin

    Blue Fin

1567 Broadway New York, NY 10036
212-918-1400 If you're looking for mixed drinks at the W Hotel, stick to their WiFi-equipped Living Room bar. Blue Fin is for--well, what did you expect?--seafood. As is the nature of a beloved W franchise dedicated to the chicer-than-usual tourist, Blue Fin's bar is going for that New Age/space-lounge look: including a leafless tree, everything is either spray-painted silver or made of metal. Should the craving for an alcoholic beverage outweigh your food appetite, do skip the cocktails and head for the white wine. Read more about Blue Fin >>
