http://www.abraconyc.com Co-owner Jamie McCormick is the man with the long silver hair, carefully pouring hot water into porcelain cones known as Melitta filters. The water passes through the ground coffee from Counter Culture (a house blend of Brazilian, Sumatran and Ethiopian beans) and drips down into the mug waiting below. The process might take awhile, but a line snaking out the door indicates that people are willing to wait for quality. Don't expect to settle in with a laptop; the space is barely big enough for a half dozen people and a small wooden counter is the only option for eating in. Lunch is particularly busy as people chow down on small plates from the ever-changing, seasonal menu, such as roasted vegetables and a cheddar frittata or onion marmalade, Swiss cheese and potato on focaccia, available every day after 12pm in prix fixe meals or a la carte. If you're looking for a quick snack, co-owner Elizabeth Quijada bakes everything from moist olive oil cakes to pistachio cookies.—Keith Wagstaff More >>

http://www.bcupcafe.com This is the kind of funky coffee shop every neighborhood should have at least one of. The graffiti-style paint job outside is a sign of what to expect inside, a design scheme that celebrates the East Village's artsy, gritty history with contemporary art hanging on just about every available piece of wall space. Antique furniture, from plush orange couches to vintage ornate mirrors, provides a nice homey touch to the café. The menu is scrawled across a giant blackboard in front. The espresso drinks and specialty iced coffees, such as the frozen vanilla and white chocolate café mocha, should provide you the energy to navigate the free Wi-Fi for hours. If you get hungry, you can order one of the 12 sandwiches on the menu, featuring items like avocado and tuna or roast beef on your choice of whole wheat, French bread or rosemary ciabatta.—Keith Wagstaff More >>

http://www.bosienyc.com Named for Oscar Wilde's lover (the owner is a big fan of the writer), this tranquil West Village spot offers the usual bounty of afternoon-appropriate finger sandwiches, scones, and quiches. You'll also find an impressive selection of over 80 teas from l'Âge de Thé, including green, black, white, and rooibos varieties. Best of all, though, are the fancy desserts--try the Darjeeling tart or the Paris Brest. Then grab a book and curl up on one of the armchairs with a cup of Earl Grey and, of course, The Picture of Dorian Gray. More >>

Coffee lovers come into this cozy West Village café for a caffeine buzz with a clear conscience. All of their beans are from Rook Coffee Roasters, a New Jersey-based company that roasts a variety of single-origin, fair-trade organic coffee beans. Baristas stand behind the wooden counter turning these beans into cups of drip coffee as well as espresso drinks like lattes and macchiatos. Tea lovers can opt for a cup of Earthbound Tea, organic loose-leaf teas like Ceylon gold from Sri Lanka and white peony from the Fujian province in China, all shipped in eco-friendly packaging. The café itself is a casual little affair outfitted with white paint, menus written on chalkboards and rustic wooden details. Jars of cookies and other baked goods sit next to cute fruit stands full of apples, while wooden shelves hold sweet treats like stone-ground chocolate from gourmet chocolatier Taza.—Keith Wagstaff More >>

http://www.thecoffeeshopnyc.com Do you know anyone who regularly eats these overpriced burgers? Yeah, neither do we. Most of us just come to gawk at the jaw-droppingly hot waitstaffathis Union Square restaurant and bar is well-known for pulling their hired help from a flawless model/actor gene pool. Though regarded as a hotspot has-been, you can't tell as much during the summer months, when itas unbelievably hard to score a table outside (diners only, they will not-so-kindly remind you). Try heading to the downstairs lounge instead. More >>

http://www.gorillacoffee.com The big red roasting machine is pretty and it smells great. This is a very cool but in no way annoying coffee place. It is a real boon to the quality of life on Fifth Avenue. The people who work here are clearly experts but not in a creepy pretentious way. More importantly, they serve great coffee and have lots of room to sit and work on your laptop. Really, it would be weird to sit and not be looking at a laptop. They also have a low-tech bench option outside. You can buy in bulk for home, too. More >>
