  • Starbucks

    Starbucks

    322 W. 57th St. New York, NY 10019
    212-399-0714

http://www.starbucks.com Since its founding by a trio of aspiring coffee roasters in Seattle in 1971, Starbucks has grown to become the largest coffeehouse in the world, with upwards of 20,000 locations in New York and around the world. Named for the chief mate on the whaling ship from Moby Dick, the company didn't begin chasing the Great White Whale of world java domination until the 1990s, by which time it was opening a new store every day. A turbulent economy has since forced it to retrench, but the chain remains a powerhouse both commercially and politically, thanks to its op-ed-penning chairman, Howard Schultz. A purveyor of whole foods, Starbucks typically farms out its secret recipes to a single, Starbucks-owned bakery in each city, and now sells a good deal of its coffee beans at grocery stores. • Sullivan Street Bakery Chelsea

    Sullivan Street Bakery Chelsea

    536 9th Ave. New York, NY 10018
    212-929-5900

http://www.sullivanstreetbakery.com This first offshoot of the celebrated Hell’s Kitchen bakery is less bakery and more coffee shop and snackery. With its lively décor, excellent java, and interesting selection of sandwiches and pastries, it makes a formidable daytime hang – complete with wi-fi. Served on the bakery’s pizza bianca, the sandwiches tend to be pressed. Recommended are ceci (made with chick pea fritters), porchetta (Tuscan pork roast), and caprese (after the salad of tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil leaves). Reflecting the sensibilities of proprietor Jim Lahey, the baked goods are quirky but often delectable, especially the custard-crammed donuts called bomboloni and the olive oil cake, washed down with the house lemonade. http://www.tealoungeny.com With over 70 brands of loose-leaf teas, this quiet lounge caters to young, pretty, yoga-inclined mothers and their well-dressed toddlers/dogs. A slim selection of wines and beers (many of them organic) complement the hot drinks but seem, for the most part, irrelevant. More >>
