  • B Bar & Grill

    B Bar & Grill

    40 E. 4th St. New York, NY 10003
    212-475-2220

http://www.bbarandgrill.com A blue-and-red neon sign outside B's announces three of its main components--cafe, bar, and grill--but still manages to exclude a lot. Behind the white brick wall, you'll find a quaint patio and accompanying bar, a tidy connecting dining room fitted with globular paper lanterns, and, toward the front, a smaller cocktail bar. Oh, and another bar room, this time with wine-red coloring and black-and-white photos of thespians in peculiar poses. The grandiosity of it all tends to keep out locals, but that patio sure is pretty on a cool summer evening. Read more about B Bar & Grill >>

  • Barracuda

    Barracuda

    275 W. 22nd St. New York, NY 10011
    212-645-8613

Departing somewhat from the standard underlying cruisiness of your average gay bar, Barracuda strikes a relaxed pose between fun and stylish. Comprising a well-lit back room stocked with ample cushioned seats around a pool table and a flirty front room stocked with spunky barmen and at least one reasonably dark corner, patrons can choose what takes their fancy and no one gets too angsty about how their hair is looking. Regular drag shows happen weekly and two-for-one happy hour is from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m., Monday through Friday. Read more about Barracuda >>

  • Barrage

    Barrage

    401 W. 47th St. New York, NY 10036
    212-586-9390

Even if a barman does ignore you, the Calvin Klein ads on the walls of Barrage will keep you interested until they get your order happening. Plush leather seating and goldfish on the bar donat make this place a fascinating concept wonderland so much as a suitably elegant and comfortable place to have a conversation with friends or to make new ones. Happy hour is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and then again from 11 p.m. to midnight daily. Read more about Barrage >>

  • Beauty Bar

    Beauty Bar

    231 E. 14th St. New York, NY 10003
    212-539-1389

http://www.beautybar.com This is the only bar where you can have a gin & tonic while getting your nails done (but not your hair did, alas). No joke: This place offers a $10 manicure-plus-martini deal. File those claws down directly across from a fully stocked bar amid prim and proper 1950s hair-salon décor, ambiance supplied by a vinyl-only DJ. It's a theme-bar gimmick, yeah, but as long as you don't mistake the nail polish for the vodka (antique beauty products sit on the same shelf as the drinks), why not? Read more about Beauty Bar >>

  • Boots and Saddle

    Boots and Saddle

76 Christopher St. New York, NY 10014
    212-929-9684

http://www.bootsnsaddle.com While it's unlikely you'll find an actual cowboy in this relaxed gay cruise hangout, it isn't unheard of to find someone who's interested in pretending to be oneaat least for the evening. Surprisingly, it's not actually a leather bar and the crowd is generally a mix of tourists and Village regulars. Read more about Boots and Saddle >>

  • The Box

    The Box

189 Chrystie St. New York, NY 10002
    212-982-9301

http://www.theboxnyc.com Fashioned from a renovated 1930's sign factory, the Box is like one of those fabled, flapper-cluttered Gatsby parties--with the addition of burlesque dancers, circus oddities, and other strange folks you might find on Ripley's Believe It or Not. The old-timey, Prohibition-era decor--crystal chandeliers, an abandoned merry-go-round horse, the sepia color scheme--make the place appear as though it were plucked from your crazy great great aunt's photo album. But unlike Gatsby's parties, you can't just show up. Get a reservation or buddy up with the bouncer. Read more about The Box >>

  • Candle Bar

309 Amsterdam Ave. New York, NY 10023
    212-874-9155

So named because it's only lit with candles (way to save on the electric bills, guys), this bar serves as a local cruising joint for Upper West Siders. After all, everyone's cuter in near-total darkness. Read more about Candle Bar >>

  • The Cock

    The Cock

29 Second Ave. New York, NY 10003
    212-473-9406

http://www.thecockbar.com While this favorite gay bar may have moved in 2005 (the space was previously inhabited by The Hole), its knowingly-corrupt spirit is still willfully intact. A litany of cheeky riffs on its own name (visit for the "Happy Cock Hour" and you might later be featured on the bar's website in "Happy Cock Shots" photos) combined with weekly dance parties featuring guest DJs ("electro-figurehead" Man Parrish is a regular) have made this grungy spot into an area institution. Glittery go-go boys and cheap, strong drinks (served in seemingly-ironic plastic cups) appear to be in the hands of all patrons. --Mallory Stuchin Read more about The Cock >>

Now, as the oldest gay bar in Queens, it offers an alternative to Manhattanas snobbiness. The diverse neighborhood crowd is friendlyaand flirty. Having expanded and created more space, the chances are now much higher of running into someone who takes your fancy for the eveningaor longer of course.
