    New Museum of Contemporary Art

235 Bowery New York, NY 10002
212-343-0460 The New Museum. Prompting tourists on the Bowery to look up and ask 'What the hell is that?' since 2002. The eye-catching eight-story building is the work of Japanese architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa/SANAA, but the museum itself has been curating cutting-edge contemporary art since 1977. The whimsical, labyrinthan structure hosts rotating exhibitions as well as concerts and events. It serves as a grand matron to the liter of nascent galleries in surrounding Noho/Soho. Once a rather shady area indeed, this section of the Bowery is now affluent and visitor friendly thanks to NYU and a bevy of close by boutiques and cafes. More >>

  • New York City Fire Museum

278 Spring St. New York, NY 10013
212-691-1303 If you are interested in outdated topographical maps of the city or reading a brief history of New York water, then this little patriotic preservation of fireman accessories is a must-see. The highlight is a taxidermied rescue dog who received a diploma of honor in 1936. And naturally there is an impressive homage to 9-11 and its aftermath. Hours: Tue-Sat 10am-5pm, Sun 10am-4pm More >>

  • New York Hall of Science

    New York Hall of Science

    47-01 111th St. Flushing, NY 11368
718-699-0005 The New York Hall of Science is appropriately located at the site of the 1964 Worldas Fair, which is in Flushing Meadows Park. And this is also the place where that big ugly alien bug, played appropriately by Vincent DaOnofrio, tried to steal his spaceship in Men in Black. The only hands-on science museum in the city, NYHS is a good place to get down and dirty. Admission is cheap and you get to see all the creepy microbes that live on your hands. More >>

  • New York Transit Museum

Boerum Place & Schermerhorn St. Brooklyn, NY 11201
718-694-1600 Between the documentation of the brutal working conditions faced by immigrants who built the subway station and the 12 variations of turnstile, it's easy to overload on MTA history and bits of obsolete machinery here. Nevertheless, it's kind of cool to walk through every subway car design from 1904 to the present. Hours: Tue-Fri 10am-4pm, Sat & Sun noon-5pm Gallery Annex hours: Mon-Fri, 8 am-8pm; Sat & Sun 10am-6pm. More >>
