    Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum

895 Shore Road Bronx, NY 10464
    718-885-1461

http://www.bartowpellmansionmuseum.org/index.php For fans of Downton Abbey—seriously, they recently hosted a Downton Abbey-themed lecture—this place should delight. The Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum was built between 1836 and 1842, nestled in what is now the Bronx's sprawling Pelham Bay Park, as a country estate in the Greek Revival (re: ridiculously decadent) style. But it's been a museum since 1946, hosting visitors and students in the preserved opulence of its rooms and gardens. Four guided tours are conducted per day, as well as special programs and classes. At just $5 for adults, it's a bargain escape from the city. More >>

  • Van Cortlandt House Museum

Broadway & Broadway Bronx, NY 10471
    718-543-3344

http://www.vancortlandthouse.org This house is the oldest in the Bronx. George Washington stayed here, but what really makes it cool is it was a no-man's-land for much of the war and its residents were often involved in British fake-out plots. It was used as headquarters by both the British and the Americans, depending on who was winning at the time. Hours: Tue-Fri 10am-3pm, Sat & Sun 11am-4pm More >>
