http://www.achengshop.com At last, a tiny East Village boutique where the designer is selling real, proper clothes, not just tattered, reconstructed tees. Cheng's crisp, ladylike separates are as good as what you'd get at any of the city's best boutiques, a nice compromise between chic and cool. More >>

http://www.apc.fr This store would make a Francophile out of anyone. The men's looks are simple but perfect (the fits make sense and the colors are sharp), and the women's collection is more off-center (either vintage-inspired or just plain kooky) but still hopelessly chic. I love everything about this store: the wide, uneven slats of the rough wood floor, the louche and sexy sales staff, the weird, Euro-hipster music (which they also sell, by the way), the spacious dressing rooms . . . the whole thing is just genius. http://www.aaronbasha.com The tony denizens of the Upper East Side have a whole world of signs and signifiers that leave the rest of the unwashed masses scratching our heads. It's hard to find someone who doesn't recognize the Louis Vuitton logo, but did you know that jewelry from Aaron Basha practically screams class? The house specialty is bejeweled and enameled baby shoes (don't ask) and to me, they look like something from a very expensive gumball machine, but what do I know? More >>
http://www.abracadabrasuperstore.com For the Republican National Convention, Abracadabra expanded its collection of masks to include latex versions of almost every member of the Presidential Cabinet. In addition to costumes, the store sells props, magic tricks, juggling equipment, gags, and weapons. More >>
http://www.abchome.com Thereas some irony in the fact that this store is called ABC; almost nothing in here, big or small, useful or useless, could be considered basic. But it certainly is beautiful. The store itself is massive, the wares a hodgepodgeaclean modernist couches and "ethnic" tchotchkes and many things that look great in the store but might not look so great at your house. The carpet store, located across the street from the home store, offers just as extensive a collection, from elegant old rugs that would fit nicely in a stately English country home to sharp modern looks for the urban loft dweller. Cheapskates note: Both stores regularly host excellent sales, with substantial savings on a generally good variety of pieces. If youare just interested in window-shopping, definitely stop by: ABC Carpet & Home usually has the best window displays in the city. More >>
http://www.abercrombie.com Abercrombie specializes in faux vintage clothing for sporty, all-American (read: white) boys and girls. The men's clothes are cut generously to accommodate the gym-built physique while the women's clothes are sweet and Nantucket-ready. There's also a whole selection of obnoxious T-shirts for both sexes. The South Street Seaport location is their only store in Manhattan, and on any given afternoon you'll find teens from the outer boroughs and muscle boys from Chelsea, rubbing elbows as they peruse the racks. Accidental CDs, Records and Tapes has been disappointing us lately. The last couple times we went by the Avenue A landmark, it wasn't on the verge of toppling over. In fact, its uncountable CDs, books, and tapes were actually stacked neatly! Still, something tells us that it's just a few neglectful nights away from its former verge-of-collapse glory. Let us hope. More >>

http://www.acorntoyshop.com The perfect place to buy a gift for a toddler or young child. Acorn has unique, hand-made toys (many wooden) that return to the days of using one's imagination instead of playing with computerized robots, or whatever kids have these days. But that's not to say they are boring. The great thing about this place is that kids can see how they work and manipulate them directlyano batteries. This cute little Italian sandwich shop doubles as a Sicilian market for those looking for cheap, casual Italian fare in Little Italy. Absent are any of the kitschy Italian-American design clichés that mar so many other establishments in the area. Instead, the look is clean and casual, the narrow space outfitted with exposed brick, shelves of Italian groceries and a glass counter full of all kinds of breads and pastries. During lunch the place is crowded with people looking to scarf down big sandwiches like the massive Muffaletta (ham, salami, mortadella, provolone, mozzarella and olive salad) and the Il Siciliano (fried eggplant, ricotta, roasted peppers). Also available to-go are a variety of pastas like fettucine alfredo and ravioli, most at only $8 or under. Entrees such as chicken Parmigiana and shrimp scampi are similarly inexpensive. The deli also sells fresh loaves of ciabatta bread and baguettes, plus it serves espresso.—Keith Wagstaff More >>
