  • Barneys New York

    Barneys New York

660 Madison Ave. New York, NY 10021
    212-826-8900

http://www.barneys.com At once indispensable and unattainable, Barneys is a veritable temple to good taste. For the well-heeled woman, thereas jewelry, beauty essentials, a museum-like shoe department and a selection of clothes from the big-timers a Gucci, Prada, Armani a as well as up-and-coming labels and smaller, more experimental designers. Barneys stocks everything the sharp dressed man could need (ties, handkerchiefs, cufflinks) and some things (cashmere socks, custom suits) that he might just want. Both men and women have a Coop floor, where you can secure a weekend wardrobe of designer jeans and overpriced t-shirts. The store also boasts a sought-after bridal atelier and Fredas, perhaps the best department store restaurant in town. Skip the hideous house wares in the Chelsea Passage and beware the occasionally surly sales staff (they tend to be assigned to the Coop, where prices are lower and customers less discerning). If itas all just too rich for your blood, Barneys also offers some of the best people-watching in New York. More >>

    718-230-1630

http://www.beaconscloset.com At Beaconas Closet, the clothing hound within you can meld with your inner DJ. The store sandwiches a surprisingly well-stocked CD section between two much larger rooms packed with stylish resale wear. The buyers use a mysterious logic to select garmentsadon't expect to unload all your old clothes there. New and used CDs fill the racks in the tiny music room, and with my taste in arty pop and noisy underground stuff, I've pretty much found everything I wanted. More >>

http://www.beadsofparadisenyc.com Beads of Paradise houses plenty of inexpensive treasures from Southeast Asia and Africa, many with powerful implications. Thai devotional gold-leaf-wrapped candles or incense in the shapes of elephants and temples to purify; colorful soaps in scents ranging from coffee to cucumber-dill to husked rice to cleanse; and Vietnamese silk scarves and shawls to add shimmer. But the store's name is drawn from its back-room collection: literally thousands of beads of all sizes, shapes, and materials and origin. There are budget-friendly glass beads from Bali (50 cents and up) and Ghanaian wax-cut brass froi-froi, as well as pricey Nepalese inlaid bone beads and glittering semiprecious stones for that gem of a girl in your life. Also leather, lace, hemp, and metals on which to string things, and willing experts, whose classes are open to your giftee. More >>
