  • Crabtree & Evelyn

10 Columbus Circle New York, NY 10001
    212-823-9584

http://www.crabtree-evelyn.com This mall favorite sells a little bit of everything: perfumed soap and fancy kitchen supplies, lingerie-drawer sachets and floral printed bathrobes. The merch seems a bit fussy, a suburban lady's idea of chintzy English style, but if you're desperate for a last-minute mother's day present, you could do a lot worse. More >>

  • Crate and Barrel

650 Madison Ave. New York, NY 10022
    212-308-0011

http://www.crateandbarrel.com Crate & Barrel is, by a considerable margin, the best of the big-name home retail chains. The barware and tabletop pieces are a highlight: inexpensive and tasteful; even if you could afford to pay more you won't want to. The furniture is mostly attractive, and durable, too, which is key when investing in the stuff you're going to be living with for years to come. More >>

  • Crumpler

45 Spring St. New York, NY 10012
    212-334-9391

http://www.crumpler.com/us/ On a corner of Nolita, catty-corner from Spring Street Lounge and across the street from Pomodoro's Pizza, sits a Crumpler store we must have passed a hundred times without bothering to look inside. If we had, we would have found floor-to-ceiling walls crammed with no-frills bags in all shapes, colors, and sizesafrom iPod pouches to sacks big enough to smuggle a kid in. The various styles are not intuitively labeled "small backpack" or "large messenger bag," but bear curious names like "The Breakfast Buffet," "The Salary Sacrifice," "The Soupansalad," and even "The Moderate Embarrassment," "The Considerable Embarrassment," and "The Dreadful Embarrassment." Funny names for what appear to be fairly basicaalbeit impressively indestructibleabags. It's indicative of the kooky, unconventional marketing strategy of this Australian companyathe greatest manifestation being Crumpler's annual beer for bags exchange, where the stores accept beer in lieu of cash for two weeks. • Cynthia Rowley

376 Bleecker St. New York, NY 10014
    212-242-3803

http://www.cynthiarowley.com The ever-shrinking Cynthia Rowley is one of those rare designers who look like they actually wear their clothes; she's thin and girly enough to pull off her own cotton picnic dresses decorated with teacups and three-layer cakes. Indeed, everything in the Rowley empire seems fit for a rollicking garden party where rose punch and mint juleps are served, from her candy-colored slingbacks to strapless satin hostess dresses.
