http://www.debbiefisher.com The jewelry here is so exceptionally lovely that a piece of wax string (a perfect bracelet!) costs well over $50 and itas still OK (sometimes). Necklaces and earrings (most in the $100 range) are all simple and tiny a flattering on a petite woman. More >>

  • Decadance Records

    212-477-9523

http://www.decadancerecords.com This little DJ store in the East Village trades in 12-inches of glossy house, dark, energetic tech and tribal, and smooth, gooey progressive trance. • Dee & Dee

    39 W. 14th St. New York, NY 10011
    212-243-5620

http://www.deedeestores.com Fourteenth Street, once discount heaven, now boasts only a very few true cheapies, the most compelling being Dee & Dee, which has several branches between Fifth and Sixth. Along with the requisite bins of panty hose and plastic shower curtains, the outlet at 39 West 14th offers that holiday staple, the animal-head bedroom slipper, enhanced here with sound chips and labeled "talkable." Squeeze these shoes' ears, and meows and woofs fill the room; there's even a yellow and white slipper with a beak that emits a substantial quack. The original tags, still attached, read $24, but at Dee & Dee they are a far more palatable $6.99. More >>

  • Delicacies

639 Vanderbilt Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11238
    718-622-1255

This new gourmet shop is a welcome addition to a neighborhood heavily reliant on a Met Supermarket for its cheese and bread, which are the best finds at Delicacies. Bread comes from Pain D'Avignon, and artisinal cheeses come in a range from mild (creamy St. Andre from France) to stinky (Stilton Bleu from England). There are the usual pitfalls of a gourmet shop, like more flavored olive oil than people really need, but there's also flaky Maldon sea salt, and the Met certainly can't compete in that category. • Deluxe Food Market

    Deluxe Food Market

79 Elizabeth St. New York, NY 10013
    212-925-5766

Truth in advertising! This bustling joint is indeed deluxe, with a fantastic meat-fish-frozen grocery selections (doing rapid turnover), as well as two long sets of steam tables and two Cantonese roast meat counters. It's one of the best places in town for a tasty, cheap lunch, but don't go if you're in a hurry, as the space is crowded and can be difficult to navigate quickly. If you want to eat in, join the line at the steam tables near the back entrance, where there are tables and chairs. The signs posted in front of the various dishes are not always accurate, so just point to what looks good. Selections change daily and include awesome head-on fried shrimp, bean curd skin stuffed with cabbage and pork, ma po tofu and pork intestine. The fried pork dumplings are spectacular. The hot food often sells out around 6 or 7 p.m., so go early. More >>
